INDOOR-OUTDOOR – ONE BIG LIVING SPACE
The Genie likes this house. Even if the architecture does not immediately shout “extraordinary!”, the living spaces on the lower level connects so well with each other and with the pool surround, that the entire area becomes one large living space, with stunning views over the Hartbeespoort Lake outside of Pretoria, South Africa. From the games room on the South side to the TV Lounge on the North, the entire outdoor space wraps around the beautiful rim-flow pool, creating one large space, ideal for entertaining family and guests.
The pergola with retractable roof serves as the ideal solution for the area between the two upper balconies. Summers can be stifling in this area, and shading is an absolute necessity. The winters are usually fairly mild, but there are days when it can be snipingly cold. It’s on these days where the roof will be retracted to allow as much sun as possible into the adjoining living spaces.
Consideration for shading also had to be given to the two balconies on each side of the stunning infinity pool, for the same reasons the pergola was required. The challenge however, was that any shade structures here, would impose quite heavily on the overall architecture, and impact on the style of the house. We opted to recommend fitting two automated fold arm awnings which, when needed, could be extended to provide shade, but which would otherwise roll up neatly into an attractive and less obtrusive cassette.
